Driving unfamiliar hill roads in the dark is a gamble. Early Friday morning, that gamble turned fatal in Nepal's tourist hub. Two Indian nationals lost their lives after their vehicle veered off the road and plunged straight into the dark waters of Phewa Lake.
The accident took place around 4:50 a.m. near the Gairichautara bend in Pokhara-18. According to the Gandaki Province Police Office, the car was traveling from Sedi toward the bustling Lakeside area when the driver lost control. The vehicle plummeted roughly 20 meters down an unshielded stretch of road directly into the lake. Four people were inside the hatchback bearing an Indian registration plate from Bihar.
The Rescue Operation at Gairichautara
Time matters immensely in water submersions. Local security forces mobilized quickly once alarms were raised. A joint team comprising personnel from the Baidam Ward Police Office and the Armed Police Force (APF) Nepal No. 24 Kalika Battalion rushed to the crash site.
Rescuers managed to pull two occupants out of the partially submerged vehicle alive. The survivors were identified as 27-year-old Anmol Kumar Yadav and 33-year-old Suraj Yadav. Both men hail from Raxaul in the East Champaran district of Bihar. Authorities transported them quickly to Gandaki Medical College. Hospital sources confirmed that both survivors sustained non-life-threatening injuries and remained in stable condition, speaking coherently with investigators.
However, the outcome for the other two passengers was grim.
Rescuers retrieved two more occupants from the murky depths in an unconscious state. They were rushed to the Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences (Western Regional Hospital). Attending physicians pronounced both individuals dead upon arrival.
Police identified one of the deceased as 26-year-old Navdeep Kumar Yadav, also from Raxaul, Bihar, using an Aadhaar card recovered from his person. The identity of the fourth passenger—estimated by authorities to be between 40 and 45 years old—remains unconfirmed pending formal family notification.
Road Safety Concerns Around Pokhara Lakes
Pokhara draws millions of domestic and international visitors with its tranquil waters and mountain vistas. Yet, infrastructure surrounding major water bodies like Phewa Lake often lacks adequate guardrails, street lighting, or clear signage.
The stretch between Sedi and Lakeside features sharp bends that catch drivers off guard, especially during low-visibility hours before dawn. Locals have repeatedly urged municipal authorities to install robust barriers along vulnerable lakeside stretches to prevent vehicles from sliding down the steep banks into deep water.
Heavy equipment arrived shortly after the rescue efforts concluded. At around 6:20 a.m., a crane hoisted the wreckage out of Phewa Lake. Police towed the heavily damaged vehicle to the Baidam Ward Police Office for technical examination.
Investigators from the District Police Office in Kaski have launched a formal inquiry. Officers are analyzing whether speed, driver fatigue, unfamiliarity with the terrain, or mechanical failure caused the vehicle to leave the asphalt at the Gairichautara turn.
